The Journey Towards Oneness with Existence

Updated: Jan 13

Human existence is an intricate part of the universal fabric, an undeniable truth that becomes obscured when ego or "aham" takes hold. Ego creates a sense of separation, convincing us that we are distinct, superior, or special in comparison to others and the entirety of existence. However, this illusion of individuality, while seductive, distances us from the harmonious oneness that defines our true essence.

The journey of a sadhak (spiritual seeker) involves dismantling these illusions. A sadhak consciously strives to eliminate the elements in life that foster this sense of separation. Through this practice, they aim to dissolve the ego and embrace the universal flow, becoming one with the infinite existence rather than standing apart from it.

Understanding Ego and Its Role

Ego, at its core, is a construct that defines our individuality. It is necessary to some extent for functioning in the material world. However, when unchecked, ego becomes a barrier, blinding us to the interconnectedness of life. It fosters a false sense of superiority and fuels desires that are detached from the needs of the collective existence.

This delusion creates imbalance—within ourselves and in our relationships with others and nature. The more we cling to the notion of "I," the more we move away from the natural rhythm of existence.

The Role of the Guru

A true guru serves as a guide on the path of self-realization. Unlike those who inflate the sadhak’s ego with unnecessary pride or praise, a guru’s role is to gently but firmly dismantle the illusions created by the ego. The guru does not add layers to the self; rather, they help remove them, revealing the pure essence of existence that lies beneath.

By providing clarity, the guru directs the sadhak towards recognizing the futility of ego-driven pursuits. The teachings often involve helping the sadhak see beyond personal desires, transcending the need for validation or a sense of "specialness." In doing so, the guru brings the sadhak closer to the truth of oneness.

A Transformative Encounter

I once met a sanyasi whose words transformed my understanding of yoga and the role of ego. Before meeting him, I used to subtly boast about my yoga practices and the fact that we had a yoga institute in Dubai. This vanity fed my ego, and as is often the case, the bigger the ego, the bigger the suffering. Although I was suffering, I couldn’t identify the root cause of my distress.

The sanyasi quickly recognized this vanity within me. In simple but profound language, he said, "Yoga yogi ka vishay hai. Is vishay ke bare me baat karne ka adhikar usi ko hai jisne yoga ko piya hai, jiya hai. Kya tumne jiya hai?" (Yoga is the subject of the yogi. The right to speak about it belongs only to those who have truly lived and imbibed it. Have you lived it?)

This one question struck a chord deep within me. It unveiled the vanity and pride that had clouded my perception. From that moment, I began shedding the ego that had been causing my suffering. With the removal of vanity, I found myself more open to happiness, gratitude, and appreciation for life. I started feeling a profound connection with everything around me. Through the sanyasi, the guru tattva guided me towards bliss and oneness.

Becoming One with Existence

The process of aligning oneself with existence requires mindfulness, self-discipline, and surrender. A sadhak undertakes practices such as meditation, introspection, and service to strip away the mental constructs that feed the ego. Each practice is a step towards dissolving the "I" and embracing the "We."

In this journey, the sadhak learns to see the world as a unified whole, where distinctions between "self" and "other" lose their significance. This realization is not about negating individuality but about understanding that individuality is part of a larger, interconnected existence.

The Ultimate Goal

The ultimate aim is to reach a state of harmony where the sadhak no longer perceives themselves as separate from existence. This oneness is not a loss but a profound gain—a return to our natural state of being. It is a liberation from the constraints of ego and a reunion with the infinite.

By shedding the components of life that create division, the sadhak not only finds peace but also contributes to the balance and flow of the universal existence. In becoming one with the whole, the sadhak fulfills their true purpose and realizes the profound truth: we are not apart from existence; we are existence.

As we reflect on this journey, let us strive to become more aware of the illusions that hold us back and seek the guidance of those who can lead us towards the light of unity. For in oneness, we find not only ourselves but the infinite beauty of the entire cosmos.
